In recent years, laser hair removal has become one of the most popular options for removing unwanted hair on the body. However, the first thought of getting the procedure might seem intimidating for some.
Some of you who are thinking about getting the procedure might have doubts about how much it hurts. The fact is, laser hair removal does bring some discomfort. Most of those who have undergone the procedure claimed that the pain is somewhat similar to the sensation of a rubber band snapped to your skin.
We’re here to help shed some light on how painful laser hair removal truly is.
Pain Level on Each Body Part
The pain of laser hair removal procedure is different depending on which body part you’re having the procedure on. It depends on the thickness of the skin and the amount of hair you have on that specific area.
1. Face
The pain level depends on which part of your face undergoes the procedure. The upper lip is known to be more painful due to the thin skin. Whereas other parts such as cheeks, chin, and forehead are less painful.
2. Underarms
Having the procedure on the underarms is known as the most painful due to the underarms having a very thin skin. Some people compared the pain as having dozens of deep needles on your skin. However, having the procedures on your underarms is highly worth it, since you can live your life free of underarm hair. This isn’t necessarily the case for the rest of your arms, though, where the pain is much milder.
3. Bikini Line
The pain for procedures along the bikini line is comparable to having procedures on the underarms. It is quite painful. It’s almost similar to waxing, but laser hair removal along the bikini line could take longer.
4. Legs
You could say that the pain for the legs is quite moderate, due to the thickness of the leg skin, compared to the bikini line or underarms. The pain is tolerable. However, having laser hair removal on your inner thighs might hurt more than other parts of your leg.
5. Stomach
Just like your legs, having laser hair removal procedures on your stomach don’t hurt as much due to the thickness of the stomach skin. Though it’s not that painful, having the procedure on the stomach will feel ticklish. That is why most patients who have procedures done on their stomach tend to fidget and move a lot.
6. Back
Back laser hair removal is known to hurt as much as having the procedure done on your underarms or bikini line. This is due to the large amount of hairs in this area.
How You Can Manage The Pain
Now that you know the pain of laser hair removal on each body part, you also need to know what you can do in order to make the pain more manageable.
- For females, it is recommended to not do the procedure near your period. Because during menstruation, your pain receptors are more active.
- Try to stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water, which can flush your system of substances that may increase the pain.
- Avoid drinking coffee and other caffeinated beverages before the procedure.
- Make sure you have a sufficient amount of sleep, since lack of sleep can increase your pain sensitivity.
To reduce the pain, you may opt to use topical numbing creams on the area you’re having the procedure on. But most importantly, make sure you choose the right place to have the procedure that treats their patients with the utmost care–pre and post procedure.
